Paul Patton {1921-1999} grew up in the tiny Muskingum County village of Rix Mills, Ohio. It was a place where kids walked to a one room schoolhouse, worked in the fields and spent their playtime outdoors in the beautiful Appalachian foothills.
Patton went on to be a B-17 pilot in WWII and had a long career in education. When he went back to Rix Mills in 1985 he discovered that the countryside he loved had been dramatically changed by strip mining. The hill against which his village nestled had been entirely stripped away. Fearing that the way of life he knew would be forgotten, Patton began putting his memories on canvas.
With no formal training, he produced over 500 paintings that so touchingly capture a time and place gone by, that they are an artistic and historical treasure.

To all the homeowners and landlords who sensibly covered their kitchen floors or any other room with linoleum: Bill Miller says thanks.

Miller, 44, of Silver Spring, Md., turns vintage linoleum into fine art. An exhibit of his work recently opened in the Short North?s Lindsay Gallery.

His pieces look like mosaics or collages or paintings, but they're none of the above.

"The thing is, it's all linoleum," gallery owner Duff Lindsay said.

"When you're at a distance, they look like lush, vintage oil paintings. Then, when you get up close, you see that the deft brushwork is really the skilled piecing together of linoleum."

Lindsay represents a broad genre of folk artists, most of them self-taught, who work in wood, stone or paint.

Miller is his first linoleum artist. And he isn't self-taught but has an associate's degree in graphic arts from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

He began working with linoleum about 10 years ago.

"I was a painter living in Pittsburgh," Miller said. "I started working with a group of artists making big sculptures in abandoned steel mills. We would go to abandoned sites, use whatever we could and make a big creature.

"That started my scavenging. I would see old linoleum and see how beautiful it was. I saw the gorgeous patterns. I'd find it in Dumpsters and save it."

Miller uses up to 60 selections of linoleum for one work, cutting dozens of chunks and gluing them together on a board. His process of assemblage is similar to that of a mosaic.

The scene that emerges could be a self-portrait or a picture of Andy Warhol, Abraham Lincoln or Jesus. It might be a ship sailing across a storm-tossed sea or a bucolic landscape.

To create depth, he adds layers. In Kentucky Home, depicting a house and its yard, five layers of linoleum pieces overlap so that trees can be seen in front of the house.

The challenge, Miller said, is often to find a tiny piece of linoleum to complete an image.

"I'm taking a bit of the past and re-claiming it."

Joey Monsoon is a storyteller…. but he does not paint complicated visual scenarios, or give clues to his narratives in the actions of his figures. Joey’s stories are told in the eyes of his subjects, and in the framework that supports their skin. It’s rare to see a self-taught artist so interested in the anatomy of his people; it’s as if he has performed ghoulish autopsies to see what makes them tick.

Monsoon fell in love with drawing heroes and characters as a child… he drew obsessively and has never stopped. Later in he was drawn to the expressionist portraits of Egon Schiele, the energy of graffiti and the underground art of Robert Williams.

In the 1990s Joey began experimenting with paint, a laborious series of trials and errors with acrylic and gouache. In 2005 his work started appearing in group shows, garnering so much attention that he was voted ColumbusUnderground.com’s “Artist of the Year” in 2008 and again in 2009. This is his first show at LINDSAY GALLERY.

In his own words:

My figures and portraits hover somewhere between reality and myth. Their worldly weariness is revealed through a dream-like lens. They are not so much portraits of people as they are portraits of emotional triumphs and failures. We don’t always know their stories, yet in our gut we know how they feel.

“Each doll that I make is one of a kind as well as handcrafted. They are symbolic in their afflictions. For me, My dolls are a testimony to the trauma and sorrow of being female and living with mental illness. When I create the dolls, I become absorbed and preoccupied with internal conflict as well the private depths of my childhood and psyche. The dolls are adored and loathed by me at the same time. I prefer to have them viewed in large quantities so they appear to be even more obsessive and detailed in nature.”

JIM BLOOM

Jim Bloom was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1968. He moved to Philadelphia in the mid 1980s, where he currently lives. Bloom attended Temple University in 1988 intending to study film, but left after his introductory year. From childhood on, Bloom has been making visual art that is directly related to his own experiences, particularly of human interaction, relationhsips, and society, as well as his interests in film, story-telling, and the visual languages of his culture. Influences include artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, and Red Grooms, who Bloom says impacted him early on with a sense freedom and boldness of expression which he extends to his own vision and work. Bloom’s recent large scale expressive, colorful, textured paintings have evolved from signature drawing and collage styles which the artist has developed and honed since childhood. Whichever medium he chooses, Bloom’s work captivates and draws the viewer into a created world that is a mirror of contemporary reality from his perspective. Portraits or scenes often evoke film stills loaded with information about the subjects depicted and the artist himself, telling stories with biting wit and irony, often incorporating text. Bloom says he wants to make artistic images that function like television; to capture the eye and quickly convey a message or feeling that will leave a lasting impact on the viewer.

We're happy to have Harry back for his second show at LINDSAY GALLERY. Since his first show here we have successfully shown his work at Art Chicago, Folkfest Atlanta, and at Outsiders/Outside.
A native Floridian, Harry was uprooted when Hurricane Andrew destroyed his hometown. He wandered for a time, finally settling in Nashville.
Harry's paintings blend past, present and future into a timeless world that is a place he says he would like to go on vacation.
Living near Nashville, his paintings have caught the eye of many people in the recording industry... including Cheryl Crow and Michelle Branch.

Milwaukee welder Kendall Polster started out making steel furniture, but over time his tables and chairs morphed in to the sculptures he's know for today. Polster's creatures are surprisingly elegant, especially when you consider that they are mostly made of scraps from his shop floor.

I have rarely been as excited about an artist as i am about Mark Thomas. The level of technical ability... the influences of American regionalism and WPA art made it hard for me to believe that he was self-taught, but he is!

Mark was born in 1967 in southern Ohio and lives on the east side of Columbus. He looks to his neighborhood for visual inspiration. Children playing, people drinking and dancing, trash collectors and construction workers tend to be the subjects of his work. Like the American regionalist painters of the 30s and 40s Mark is interested in the "American character." The character that he sees is in people of all races playing, partying, working , even brawling.
In his words: "There is something special about ordinary people doing ordinary things."

Thomas has clearly looked at a lot of art and absorbed the influences of different genres. And while he says he likes cubism, he seems to be completely unaware of artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Marsden Hartley. Perhaps he saw WPA era murals or prints as a child. But whatever the influences, he has combined them into his own unique style... not quite folk or fine,
a true "contemporary self-taught" artist.

Mark works in acrylics, pastels and charcoal... but also oils which many self-taught artists avoid.
This is his first one-man show, but i believe he's ready to join the ranks of the great African American self-taught artists from Columbus.

I'm excited to announce that
KARL MULLEN will be coming to Columbus for the opening of his new show Friday 06/12/09 at LINDSAY GALLERY. We were not sure that this show was going to happen, as Karl has been ill.... but he's feeling better and will show off his new artwork and play some of his music!
There will be large scale works on paper, but this time we will also be showing a large series of small paintings done on letters, book pages, ledgers and envelopes.

The artist's reception is from 6-9 pm, and then Karl Mullen and friends will perform at 9:00.

GLORIES: VIVIAN PITMAN AT LINDSAY

Wearing elegant, yet simple, Africa-print dresses and matching head wraps, Vivian Pitman and her mother, the artist Barbara Thomas, welcomed guests to their Lindsay Gallery Opening on Friday, February 27. It was a gala evening. Guests and glasses sparkled. Vivian's unique and bright paintings almost jumped off the wall, and so did the more sedate renderings of her mother. All of the small, puppet-like dolls seemed to breathe, even though they are cartoon-ish and stout and dance without strings!

When I asked Pitman what her dolls were made of, she replied, "clay. And anything I need to use and find to use."

Pitman is a self taught artist. She seems to dance, like a break dancer, between colors, words, and "schools" of art. Her liveliness surpasses the terms "primitive" or "authentic." She is unafraid to use bright reds, greens, yellows, purples. She knows how to create textures and surfaces, and she will not reveal her secret: how she uses sand in her creations.

Her composition -- sometimes elementary, sometimes random -- is always effective. Expressive. As in Expressionist! In THE DEATH OF LINCOLN, Pitman, at her most elementary, has depicted the martyred President as resting, his corpse strangely tube-shaped, on bright grass surrounded by a color guard in bright yellow shirts! The crudely painted soldiers are firing a salute, "as they would for a President," Pitman said. An encirclement of creatures that resemble merry go round horses -- or reindeer -- surrounds the scene. And everything dances together. --As I recall, this is a scene in which a grotesque blood red Bird of Death is veering.-- A Pitman may be child-like, but it is rarely, or ever, "cute."

Vivian employs words; most of her paintings include titles or phrases. You'll find an ALPHABET OF SLAVERY: "A is for African, torn from his home. B is the bloodhound to catch all that roam. C is the cotton plant. . ."

One of the small stout three-D puppet-like dolls represents "Eta Moten, singer, actress, hailed as a pioneer for black actresses."--I had to look her up!-- Pitman "saw Moten once in a movie." And many remarkable personages will be seen at this Lindsay show. You will learn much. For example, Virgina Hamilton, who wrote books for young people, is represented.

The slogan,"Only Love Can Drive Out Hate" is visible. So is a heart wrenching Klan Whipping, and a Lynching, and the admonition "KKK. Leave the negro alone!" (in which blood drips from the white man's club!) Gazing at these grotesque depictions we are reminded of the ferocity of anarchist posters that blossomed before and between World War I and II. They said it like it was.

Pitman celebrates history and narrative in a unique way, and she is, indeed, worthy of the title, Griot. History bearer and tale teller. Lincoln, Martin Luther King, yes, and nearly life-sized President Barak Obama, are much in evidence. In one painting the wonderful young President, in profile, wearing a classy green sweater -- I just know it's cashmere -- looks admiringly at a recognizable, if stout, Martin Luther King. They are both happy because Barak Obama has fulfilled The Dream. A wide Stars and Stripes provides a background for the two gifted leaders. In one painting Obama-as-Hero seems to have morphed into Spider Man!

OOOPS! One of Pitman's most outre subjects, unique but not offensive, depicts women sitting at a long table, similar to that in the legendary Last Supper. However,Pitman's "supper" presents, not traditional disciples of Jesus, but women who are squirting breast milk at each other! Pitman said this painting was inspired by Women Who Earn Money by Selling Their Own Milk!

IN OUR TELEPHONE INTERVIEW Pitman revealed that she works part time, is a Christian who loves her church, and that her art career started when she began making ladies hats and selling them. Her mother, Barbara Thomas, a strong yet more conventional artist, has always encouraged Vivian.

About her own art Pitman said, "it's kind of a gift, like a talent for throwing a baseball. You're born with it, but you have to practice. I'm still learning."

She added, "I'm patient and strong, and I can work hard." Pitman likes to listen to jazz and all kinds of music. She is not immune to the power of dreams. And she is wonderfully proud of her sister, the novelist GWANDINE THURMAN who recently published ETHIOPIAN PRINCESS. (see www.kingdomnovels.com.)

Pitman is "engaged" or engagee as the French used to say about socially concerned artists. She was definitely not born with a gold paint brush in her hand. In fact, Duff Lindsay, gallery owner and curator, first discovered Pitman through a contact at The Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

The current exhibition reveals a wide sweep of concerns and subjects, which, like the proverbial maiden in a fairy tale, Vivian Pitman has woven into a mythical assemblage of paintings, dolls, and sculptures.

Anytime there's an opening at Lindsay Gallery, chances are good that at some point, people decide to congregate among the strange and wonderful stacks of artwork in the back room.

Loaded with pieces by the folk and outsider artists that owner Duff Lindsay represents, estate art and other storage, the space was never set up for public perusal. But the chance to sneak through the open doorway and catch a glimpse of a painting or sculpture before it's whisked off to a private collection or a show in a distant gallery is one that many of his patrons often take.

It makes you feel like you're being let in on a secret.

"Over the years, so many people have said that the back room is their favorite place in the gallery," said Lindsay. "They tell me, 'I feel like you're hiding all the treasures back there.'"

The back room has long been the pulse of Lindsay's business. While there are some Columbus collectors of the art he specializes in, the gallery's success is ultimately national.

Most of the sales that sustain the place are made through the back room's revolving stacks, while the gallery walls are often used to raise the profile of lesser-known artists. A long-standing reputation has earned Lindsay high-profile space at national events, including Folk Fest in Atlanta - one of the world's largest folk art shows.

The current exhibit, It Came From the Back Room!!!, is a rare treat, with a couple hundred paintings by multiple artists literally covering the gallery walls from ceiling to floor.

There are pieces by Ohio luminaries of the genre who have passed, like Elijah Pierce, Popeye Reed and William Hawkins, but also by many of the living artists that Lindsay works with, some of whom are rarely, if ever, shown locally.

One of those artists is San Francisco artist Jane "In Vain" Winkelman, who creates her haunting personal/political paintings while living on the edge of homelessness.

"I never have enough of Jane's work to have a Jane Winkelman show," said Lindsay. "She always lives painting to painting, so when she makes one, she needs to sell it."

The exhibit also reveals the wide variety of work that may fall into the category of folk/outsider art.

Winkelman's work might have an edge, as does the work of Irish artist Karl Mullen, who has many pieces in the show. But there are also the charming, periwinkle-infused childhood scenes of landscapes and circus acts from Newark, Ohio's Janis Price. Born in 1933, Price, whom Lindsay calls "an American memory painter in the Grandma Moses tradition," is also widely known, and has pieces in the Smithsonian.

Local artist Vivian Pittman has two captivating Barack Obama dolls and a couple of paintings of her Cleveland Avenue-area neighborhood in the show. She will have her own exhibit opening at Lindsay Gallery later this month, which will include Biblical paintings and a series of dolls depicting various historical figures in honor of Black History Month.

"People have a perception that they know what all folk and outsider art looks like, but I think a show like this shows that there are a number of styles," says Lindsay. "When someone tells me they don't like this kind of art, I have to imagine they simply haven't seen enough of it."

"SCARY? You Have No Idea!”

For Halloween night we present two artists who use their artwork

to deal with things that are more frightening than goblins or scary stories.

Amber Groome makes tiny meticulously crafted dolls that chronicle her struggle with bipolar disorder. Amber has a love/hate relationship with her dolls, and feels that letting them go is a positive step.

Shaun Engel's drawings, mailed out from behind bars, tell stories of crime and drug abuse... but also of his jailhouse conversion to conservative Judaism.
